Vercel AI SDK: a free, open source TypeScript toolkit with one API for many model providers, streaming chat hooks and the ToolLoopAgent class.

The Vercel AI SDK is an open source TypeScript library for building AI features and agents in Node.js, Next.js, React, Vue, Svelte and Angular apps. Version 7 (released June 25, 2026; ai 7.0.155 on npm as of October 28, 2026) requires Node.js 22 or newer and ESM imports.

It has three parts. AI SDK Core covers generateText, streamText, structured output, tool calling and the ToolLoopAgent class. AI SDK UI provides hooks such as useChat that render streamed messages and tool calls. AI SDK Harnesses (experimental) run existing coding agents such as Claude Code, Codex or Pi behind the same stream.

Pricing: the SDK is free. You pay for model usage, either with your own provider keys through packages such as @ai-sdk/openai, @ai-sdk/anthropic or @ai-sdk/fireworks, or through Vercel's optional AI Gateway, which charges provider list prices with no token markup and has a free tier with a subset of models. Common alternatives are Mastra, LangGraph.js and the OpenAI Agents SDK for TypeScript.
